Tekken" Director Says Fighters Are "All Like My Children" and If Players Keep Asking Questions About Their Favorite Players, I Will Charge Them a Lecture Fee

What started as a joking retweet when Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada told fans to buy 50 copies of Tekken 8 if they wanted Anna Williams added to the game ended in a lengthy argument, harsh tone, and business advice.

Harada is known to be quite vocal about subjects he cares about. Last week, he lamented the decline of Soul Calibur and summed up the situation with a response that read like an academic paper. This time, however, Harada weighed in on the debate over whether certain Tekken developers' favorite characters take precedence over others.

After sharing a video of Anna Williams, one fan asked Harada why he disliked her so much: "You always make her lose to Nina and treat her like she is inferior to you when she is clearly loved and popular." In response, Harada offered the following lengthy explanation: there is no favoritism.

"I don't remember how many times I've written here since I started tweeting, but I don't dislike certain characters," Harada said. If I appear to like or dislike them, that's just your misunderstanding." He continues that these perceptions are likely to be influenced by the players' own preferences and "distorted by assumptions."

Harada also admits that he does not actually like the "popularity pecking order" that fans seem to have for certain fighters. He says, "On top of that, I'll say it again: your love for the character is distorting your view of things. It's very silly to think of my point of view as one-sided and negative because of that." Ouch.

But it didn't end there. It turns out that Harada was actually fighting on two fronts. Because some people took issue with another part of his tweet, which was the lack of favorites. This time the problem seemed to be adding a new character to each release.

"What's wrong? Harada replies. Well, from now on I'll take tuition for lectures such as 'What is a game?', 'What is game development?', 'What is the game market?', and 'What is the game business? Also, before we talk about your business views, tell me about your business track record."

Now that the smoke has cleared, I think I can assure you that Mr. Harada does not actually have a preference and is not setting his sights on your favorite fighter simply because it is currently weak - although it may feel that way.
