As a child, I had several Game Boys, most of which I acquired secondhand. Like the Eye of Sauron mounted on the top of the unit, the 180-degree rotating camera allowed you to take selfies and print them on thermal paper with an additional Game Boy printer.

Today, thanks to the Emulator Dock, the Game Boy camera has been reborn as a functional PC webcam, offering a glorious 16,000 pixel black and white resolution.

The Epilogue GB Operator dock allows users to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges on Windows, macOS, and Linux devices using a built-in emulator (via Tom's Hardware). The dock itself has been available since 2021, but its development team has spent the past three years tweaking the device to deliver a live feed from the Game Boy camera.

The hard work seems to have paid off, as the team posted a video showing incredibly low-resolution footage of two of its members bursting with joy at their progress. According to the epilogue, the live feed is finally working, but still needs to be "tweaked in some respects and enable configuration options."

The GB Operator dock is compatible with PCs, but the test window shown in the video is running on macOS. So it is unclear whether any further tweaking is needed to get Windows devices to use it as a terrible, no-good but attractive alternative to regular webcams. Still, Epilogue says it can't wait to see everyone having fun with the device, suggesting that a release may be imminent.

YouTube channel Retro Game Couch has also previously successfully made a Game Boy camera work as a webcam, but in this case, a Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Game Boy adapter cartridge, HDMI upscaler, and HDMI capture device combination was required.

The GB Operator dock appears to be a much more viable way to make the world's worst camera work with modern devices, as it is a much cleaner and smaller solution.

Why would you want to do that? Relatively recent laptops have some pretty awful webcams. At least with this product, you can resort to retro coolness.

"I use Logitech" is terribly boring. For me, it's all about the Gameboy camera."

Forget about 4K resolution. The real hip kids are going to the Game Boy.
