SSD prices may stabilize or fall as NAND chip manufacturers boost production

After repeated pessimistic news about SSD pricing, there is light at the end of the tunnel. South Korean outlet Chosun Daily reports that the loud noise of NAND memory manufacturing is boosting production.

That should mean that the upward pressure on SSD prices for PCs in recent months will ease. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the leading South Korean chip makers, are reportedly increasing their nand flash memory production along with Japan's Kioxia.Previously, it was cutting production as an oversupply of chips was pushing prices down.

From late 2022 to 2023, it was reported that all major South Korean producers had cut production by about 30 percent to solidify prices. Meanwhile, WD and Micron are said to have cut production by more than 50%.

In recent days, the oversupply of NAND memory has begun to subside, thanks to their reduction in production and also to increased demand thanks to the rise of AI data centers.

Of course, increasing supply of NAND flash chips that make up SSDs is very likely to lead to downward pressure on SSD prices. Indeed, some observers believe that the increase in NAND production may be a little too much, a little too early.

"With the exception of the large capacity NAND used in AI data centers, it is hard to say that the entire NAND market is recovering. A sudden surge in production is likely to lower rising NAND prices," said Kim Yang Peng, a researcher at the Korea Institute of Industry and Trade.

Similarly, we can argue that SSD prices for PCs were not that bad, at least. Using one of our favorite drives as a guide, the WD Black SN1X, which launched in late 2022 with a 2TB trim for aboutし280 in the summer of 2023, fell to a very short low ofと90, but was ticked at aboutし120 for a while. This was a realistic long-term low, but the current price has risen toド148.

Oh, I do not know, low-end Nvidia GPUs for low500, compared to it still pretty decent value. The SN850X is available in a 1TB format forま104. In any case, the good news is good news, and cheap SSDs are definitely good news. Oh, you can check out all the best SSD deals here.
