Obsidian CEO Confident of Avowed's 2024 Release: "We have a lot of work ahead of us for some time to come, but it's not "Suck it up."

"Avowed" is Obsidian's next big title, a first-person RPG spin-off in the "Living Lands" setting of Pillars of Eternity. The game's release date is this fall, and we thought we knew when it was coming out until the information was removed from Obsidian's website.

As Wario64 discovered on Twitter, a post on the Obsidian website about the Avowed story trailer, which was shown at the Xbox Games Showcase yesterday, stated that the game was scheduled to launch on November 12. This detail was quickly removed, but IGN managed to capture and share a screenshot as follows.

In a busy LA game showcase this week, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart, in an interview with PC Gamer (before we discovered the revised release date), said he is confident the studio can launch the RPG in 2024 as planned He said the studio is confident it will be able to release the RPG in 2024 as planned.

"Yeah, we feel like we can pull this off," Urquhart said. 'It may take some work, but it's just work. That's probably the best way to put it at this point. We've had enough experience with Unreal Engine 5, and we've made these kinds of games before. We're basically building on top of a lot of what already exists in Outer Worlds.

"My eyes tell me that we have a lot of work ahead of us for some time to come.

It is unclear if the plan is to specifically release Avowed on November 12, 2024. In the original post, Game Director Carrie Patel stated: "The last few months at Obsidian Entertainment have been fast-paced and exciting. Since meeting you at the Xbox Developer Direct this past January, we have been busy preparing Avowed for a November 12, 2024 launch."

This was then amended to simply: "We have been busy with Avowed.

("We will let you know the date soon."

"We've been busy with Avowed," Urquhart said in an interview.)

A slip, to be sure, but by no means a specific date: November will be in direct competition with Assassins Creed Shadows, which launches on November 15, while Avowed is fully in "fall" territory. Obsidian will want to dodge this particular behemoth.

This release will be a "fall" release.

Another point in favor of this release date not being final is the fact that it would have been part of that big shiny story trailer unveiled at yesterday's showcase. But even so, Urquhart confirms that 2024 is still the plan.

This article was updated after publication to include Urquhart's comments.
