Lenovo launches its Legion 7000K Desktop Gaming Pc: Equipped with a laptop Cpu

A desktop with a laptop Cpu is not a new concept. Over the years, we've reviewed several examples, including Nuc and AIO PCs, but a high-performance gaming Pc with a laptop Cpu is quite another.

Lenovo has just released such a PC (H/T Tom's Hardware). The model has a choice of GPUs from the RTX4060 to the RTX4070Ti Super and comes with a choice of i9 14900HX or i7 14650HX Cpus. I added 32GB of RAM to it and got a high-quality gaming PC, which is coolable and in a very nice-looking case.

While it's only a Chinese release for now, the Lenovo Legion 7000K is always likely to see a wider release in the coming months.

In

, why would Lenovo choose to release a desktop gaming PC with a mobile chip while you could opt for something like the i9 14900 or 14900T?

I'm a huge believer in power-efficient, quiet PCs. I would like to assume that is the mindset behind this choice. If I focus on the i9 14900HX, it can be considered a downclocked, power-efficient version of the desktop i9 14900K. But the latter is in a different league when it comes to power consumption, with 125W/253W (and even more) power limits for PL1 and PL2. In contrast, the 14900HX has a base TDP of 45W and ranges up to 157W.Despite being able to reach heights up to 5.8GHz on the P core, it is only 200mhz less than the 14900K

So the 14900HX consumes less power at load and idle, runs a lot of coolers, and provides almost all the performance of a desktop i9. It makes additional sense for gaming rigs, as the game rarely puts all the cores under heavy sustained loads.

However, there are some compromises.  Since the mobile Cpu is usually soldered, it can not be upgraded — in this case, the 14th generation is the end of the line of this generation, so it also means that the cooler is a bespoke one. I don't see it as a problem, given that it is better than any laptop cooling you could want.

Mobile CPU aside, the system really doesn't look good in my opinion. It has decent connection options and looks like what is possible cooling.

If Intel can't run high-end chips without consuming power, we're very fortunate to see more mobile-on-desktop options, let's see how the Arrow Lake desktop Cpu works. If the top performers need 300W+, the gaming PCs on board the Lunar Lake may show up in the coming months.

Legion7000K is available for pre-order in China. The I7 14650HX/RTX4060 combo starts at aboutル1,303, while the i9 14900HX/RTX4070Ti model starts at up toル2,350.
