CD Projekt does not feel "threatened" by Larian's move to Warsaw: "More, cheerful"

Baldur's Gate3 developer Larian Studios launched a new business in Warsaw earlier this month to help develop "2 very ambitious RPGs." In Warsaw, the Polish capital, there is already CD Projekt, one of the most ambitious RPG studios in the world.1 Is there a room for two people in that town?

While it may seem like a strange question at first glance, Warsaw is more populous than the Canadian city of Montreal, and has multiple game studios from companies such as Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and Warner (Larian also has a studio in nearby Quebec City). But in case there was any doubt, CD Projekt co-CEO MichaƂ Nowakowski said it was all good with the "hood."

"It's more hilarious when it comes to Larian opening a new studio," nowakowski said during an investor call. "Larian is a great person, Swen is a great person, and the team is great... Completed [Baldur's Gate3], I loved it. Personally, I'm a big fan of D&D.

"We see any threat' To be honest, there is always a threat that someone can leave and go somewhere else, whether they have a studio in Warsaw or it is a job opportunity somewhere else, the difference is not so great. The world is a fairly small place, and developers are very often mobile, especially at the senior level. And if someone did not want to work on the project, but dreams of working with someone else, they do it anyway. So whether Larian is next door or not is not so different from our point of view. We wish them only the best."

It's a reasonable position to take: I'm not intimately familiar with EU rules, but generally speaking, when it comes to relocating for work, Europe and Larian is definitely a powerful RPG studio, but CD Projekt is quite equivalent in that regard. And, as Larian's boss, Swen Vincke himself, said when he announced his new studio in Warsaw, "There's a lot of talent here," apparently, enough to go around.

Correction: The report originally indicated that the statement in CD Projekt's financial call was made by Co-Chief Operating Officer Piotr Karwowski. They were actually made by Nowakowski.
