At this point, it's one of the recurring events of life: you buy groceries every week, pay rent every month, and somewhere in between you'll wake up in the morning to see tens of thousands of people playing survival games you hadn't heard of when you went to bed the night before. Soulmask, which hit Early access today, seems to be the latest offering to satisfy the endless hunger for base construction and resource foraging. At the time of writing, 31,000 viewers have watched Soulmask on Twitch, and it's ahead of all other survival craft games that aren't called Rust or Minecraft. Steam players seem to like it too, with about 16,000 concurrent players and an early rise to very positive ratings. When I asked what I thought of Soulmask last week, it's not a shabby first show, given that I thought it might be talking about something from the Lego sensation Bionicle of the early 2000s. Indeed, I would not have been completely off the mark. In addition to the usual survival game harvesting and crafting, Soulmask allows you to wear masks that "embody the spirit of ancient heroes" to use unique abilities like invisibility or shoot homing arrows. Basically like a bionicle! No wonder people are so obsessed with it that Soulmask appears to have a powerful combat focus, with its mask abilities closing in on 8 weapon types and 75 skill-worthy combat options. It's dabbled in settlement management as well, with an employable tribe that can handle some of your tasks at your base back home. Where so many survival games are distorting the survival chic of medieval Europe and shipwrecks, Soulmask is by riffing on Mesoamerican aesthetics, of course, Steam's list looks very comfortable explaining the game's "primitive tribal clans", so how it delicately handles its inspiration. I'm not completely confident in how I'm doing. You can also see Destiny's man walking around in one of the 1 screenshots. It is unclear how it fits. Soulmask is now available with early access on Steam.
