At Computex2024, AMD announced the new ryzen9000 series of processors, all using the Zen5 architecture. This is a 5th generation Cpu that uses an AM2 socket, and one thing is clear: you can't do that in the end. In fact, the AM5 will look at the new Ryzen models until 2027 and beyond, confirming AMD's commitment to socket life.

AM5 was thoroughly featured at Computex2022 after first seeing the eye of the day at the Ces2022 event. Designing a socket that will withstand several generations of chips is not an average feat, as it needs to support not only current technologies, but also technologies that are not yet in use, and future power and performance demands.

The first processors that found home in a small 40x40mm socket — its 1,718 contact pins — were all Zen4 powered Ryzen7000 series, and the latest Ryzen9000 joins them. You might squeeze the Cpu into a socket, but it's not here.

This is because AMD reaffirmed its commitment to using the same socket for many years by announcing that AM5 will continue to use the new Ryzen processors for another 3 years and beyond 2027.

If we assume that AMD can release a new series of Cpus every 20 months, we're looking at another 2 generations of ryzen, perhaps 3 generations. Putting them all together, the AM5 will come with 4-5 generation processors in total.

This is almost the same as the "legendary" AM4 as far as Ryzen chips are concerned. The first processors to use that socket were several older a-Series APUs and the last Athlon X4 models. It's been in use since 2016, but AMD is still releasing a new Cpu and could probably do so for another 1 year, and its lifespan is a really amazing 9 years.The push to support ever faster RAM and provide additional fast PCIe lanes will require more contact pins than AM5 provides. You will be very surprised if AM5 lasts any longer, because it is a good choice. But even if, for example, everything ends in 2028, it will be great news for those who have an excellent AM5 motherboard at the moment.You should be able to drop a new, faster CPU into it and enjoy a faster gaming PC whenever you want.
