Alan Wake2 hasn't made a profit in 6 months and we don't see a Steam release, but Remedy says it's under control

Alan Wake 2 is great. 88% of PC gamers are great. Best Story 2023 Great. It's a healing that takes all the lessons learned across a long career and distills them into something wonderful. And, obviously, not enough of us are still buying it.

In a recently released 2024/1〜3 business review, Remedy's Ceo Tero Virtala wrote that while it sold 2 million copies at the beginning of the 130th month, the company only recouped a "significant portion of the marketing and development costs" of Alan Wake2. It's an important part, but not all. In a subsequent earnings call, Virala reaffirmed that Remedy also stated that it experienced an operating loss of 2024 Q1 of 210 million euros. It's worth mentioning, but the company bought back control at that time.

This is a shame because alan Wake2 is definitely one of the best games of 2023 and deserves a quick turnaround to profitability than it's obviously gotten.1 Virala doesn't seem to be too pessimistic about it at least (and perhaps things are pretty bad for the CEO to start shouting "close to the end" on earnings calls

This game has helped Remedy's overall royalties increase year-on-year, as opposed to other Remedy games like Control and Alan Wake Remastered. It's a great place to start. I wouldn't necessarily worry too much, though: Alan Wake Remastered experienced the exact same thing in Q1 of the year after its release.

Overall, Remedy seems to be quite buoyant about its future. Virala dedicates a large chunk of both business review and revenue to talking about the possibilities opened up by acquiring the right to control.Mr. Virala says Remedy is currently exploring both self-publishing and partner publishing for future games in each series.

[20][20][20][20][20][20][20][20][20] we've moved to full production of the condor multiplayer control spinoff.; Control 2 has hit the end of the proof-of-concept phase; a remake of Max Payne is expected to hit full production in this year's Q2; and the free-to-play multiplayer project Kestrel is still in the concept phase"."

Overall, things look pretty good before it comes to earnings, even if more people need to pick up alan Wake2. Remedy expects revenue to increase in 2024 and operating profit to improve, and will be more specific about it when business model decisions and potential contracts for Control2 and Condor are made.

Oh, a little bad news: It seems it will take a while (so far) for Alan Wake2 to hit Steam.  Asked if the game would come to Valve's platform during the earnings call, Virala said, "It's also speculation that we can't do at the moment. At the moment, Alan Wake2 is available in the Epic Games Store and we hope PC gamers will find it there.Sorry for the fear of jumping, steam followers.
