There is only one way to respond to the crushing mental torture given to us by modern times: turn it into a game. So whether human or not here, things like chat roulette challenge you to decide whether your conversation partner is human or AI.

Human or Not, billed as "part of a large scientific research project by AI21Labs," came out last year before it was actually no longer available. Luckily for us, it's coming back now and people are thoroughly confused by the mix of tricksy large language models (LLM), so it takes over most of my Twitter feed and uses "Jurassic-2, GPT-4, Claude, Cohere" as part of the mix, according to the FAQ.

The game is presented as a "social Turing test" and refers to the old evaluation method proposed by alan Turing himself to evaluate whether an entity is a machine or a human. That means figuring out whether a machine can show behavior that is indistinguishable from a human being. If my game is any indication, they can. But perhaps those LLMs have not really passed the test as much as I am failing.

It's unsettling. Based on the conversation I had, it turned out that I was hoodwink very easily when it comes to the ol'turing test. I regularly confidently declare my partner to be human before the game pulls the rug out from under me and tells me that they were AI. Sometimes the reverse happens, too, frankly it feels more like an indictment of my conversation partner than me, frankly.
