"Final Fantasy 14", Square Enix conducts "Attack Investigation and countermeasures"

Final Fantasy14 has been undergoing a series of DDoS attacks over the last few days, with players being delayed, randomly logged out and unable to access some data centers for hours.

The attack began on Monday, 5/6, but this was a time when most of the problems were occurring for players. Servers in North America and Europe appear to be bearing the brunt of the problem, but servers in Japan and Oceania were also affected. The first round of attacks lasted from 1pm (GMT) on Monday to 2:30pm (GMT) on Tuesday for more than 24 hours.

Unfortunately, for fishermen, gardeners, and raiders, things are not over yet. The second wave hit the game yesterday, around 11pm GMT. It is still in progress, and this time it is mainly affecting data centers in Europe, North America and the oceans. In a post on The Lodestone, Square Enix said it was "investigating the attack and taking measures" and that "additional information will be provided as the situation evolves.""

It's a very disappointing issue for the game to go through, especially as hype ramps up for the upcoming extension Dawntrail. Many people like me probably missed quests and classes in preparation that are hard to do when you're struggling to log in to the game This attack has also occurred on the last day of the Final Fantasy 16 Collaboration event and is gone today. Thankfully, I was able to dive in during the DDoS-free time yesterday and nab my rewards, but a little more last-minute people have missed themselves

some have been able to find humor in things on Twitter, saying that the attack was simply the early arrival of the "[Dawntrail] login experience". It was a great experience. "Whoever is causing ddos attacks with Ffxiv, please stop...My mate has a fish window, and if he can't catch it because it's cut off, I don't want to wait 6 days for the next window for that particular fish," he tweeted. As someone who didn't have the mental fortitude to become a full-time fisherman, I feel their pain.

To add insult to injury, the disruption of European data centers was going through its own trouble bout between attacks. Server Equipment Issues Unrelated to the DDoS shenanigans left people struggling to log in for 5-7 hours on Tuesday for 12 hours. At least there were some kind of people out there offering to water plants for their confused brothers.

I jumped a bit into the European data center lights this morning, but so far everything seems to be okay. That could change as the days go by, or maybe Square Enix is finally dealing with things. Hopefully there will be much less fuss in the next few days — I have some specter destiny to grind.
