EA's CEO says they've learned a "valuable lesson" so the next battleground will be "1 more phenomenal live service

EA held a revenue offering for the 2024 Q4 financial results. This was, roughly speaking, just below where the publisher was supposed to be. The company reported revenue ofと1.66 billion, a handsome but slightly lower than expectedド1.8 billion, so the mood music of prepared remarks and accompanying shareholder calls was about EA being ready to hit to make more money in the coming years.

The positives are what you expect, the strong show from EA Sports in general and the rebranding of the FIFA series as EA Sports FC have been successful with long-term benefits. EA CEO Andew Wilson said, "Starting with College football in Fy25, we have committed to an incredible new pipeline of experience to accelerate growth after FY26."But one of the big issues for shareholders as well is what's going on in Battlefield 1. EA's one-time competitor to Call of Duty has felt away from the pace of the FPS genre for many years. Developer DICE also announced that the current season of Battlefield2042 will be the last, and that the game is in much better condition than it was launched, but the obvious question

EA last month announced that Motive, the developer of Dead Space remake, joined the wider Battlefield development team, which includes DICE, Criterion and Ripple Effect. According to Andrew Wilson, this is "the largest battlefield team in franchise history" and will "build a world of battlefield through connected multiplayer and single player experiences.""

We can see where this is heading. Wilson said the Battlefield2042 players clearly "made it clear that they want an even deeper experience," adding: "A few weeks ago, I was visiting with the team, so I couldn't get any more excited about what they showed and what we could play."

After earnings Cole Wilson expanded this a bit with an interesting encapsulation of what they're trying to do. "I've just spent a whole bunch of time with a collective battlefield team," says Wilson, "playing what they're building and it's another phenomenal live."

This is not surprising: previous battlefield titles have probably been a live service, even if they haven't done quite the full fate." In 2021, EA passed the leadership of the Battlefield series to Vince Zampella, the founder of Respawn. He continues to be in charge, and the publisher clearly spends a huge amount of resources on the following: But calling games and games "another tremendous live service" is a funny way to put it.

Elsewhere in the results, EA announced that it will release two games that have not yet been announced in the current fiscal year (before 2025/3/31/2). One is a third-party title to be published under the EA Originals label, while the other is an IP owned by EA, and the speculation allowed on the slide under the working title may necessarily have stuck to the latter Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, but I would believe it when I saw it.

As for the next battlefield, don't expect to see it anytime soon. In an investor call earlier this year, EA CFO Stuart Canfield said the new battleground was not included in EA's plans for the 2025 fiscal year. That means it can see a release in the second half of 2025, but still feels optimistic. The only certainty is that you can buy 5 different editions along with pre-launch access.
