OpenAI presented GPT-4o with a video of a guy making small talk on his phone and I can't pretend it's not really weird

OpenAI has announced a new version of ChatGPT called GPT-4o and is rolling it out to both paid and free users over the coming months.

The new GPT-4o model promises to be better in audio, video, and text recognition."It accepts any combination of text, audio, and image as input and generates any combination of text, audio, and image output," the company says.

The GPT-4o is also said to be 4 times faster than the GPT-2 Turbo, a premium model released earlier by the company, and 50% cheaper to run.

In parallel with the actual announcement of the features and features of the new model, OpenAI published a short video showing the new voice assistant features. In it, the man speaks to the voice on the phone. It's ChatGPT except that it's not a real human on the other side of the line, and it's all of these aforementioned upgrades to have conversations in real time

It's impressive— very uncomfortable, of course, but certainly impressive. Improvements to Voice assistant have led many online, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to cite the movie "Her."

The one where Joaquin Phoenix starred as a falling man for the operating system voice assistant and brought back a powerful mustache alone. Anyway, we're all choosing to gloss over the harmful pseudo-relationships it portrays, and how amazing the AI voice assistant in it is, like OpenAI

No, there's definitely something very strange about the whole video: a little talk with the bot, an intimate conversation about your life and environment. It is run by wealthy tech companies that share details. What can go wrong?

ChatGPT has a feature that helps a lot of people, but the good news is that it's more advanced.

If you are learning a language (like me), you are probably very familiar with Google Translate. This tool is missing vocabulary or is in the clutches for navigating awkward conversations abroad. ChatGPT wants to do something better with the recently announced GPT-4o real-time translation tool.

In the live demo, 2 OPENAI employees (CTO Mira Murati) speak to each other in English and Italian. Phones running the latest model of ChatGPT sat between them and handed briefs to translate each sentence. It does so rather quickly, and says each translated phrase aloud— sort of like a real-life translator might.

Google Translate offers something similar to how you can record and translate live speech. It has provided this feature for a while, too. The difference here is that OpenAI's ChatGPT acts as an intermediary between 2 people who are talking. The AI chatbot was previously only a paid version of ChatGPT, but compared to google Translate, it ranks higher in translation even in independent tests. With GPT-4o, a better translation is not coming soon, but it should be more widely available for everyone to use.

ChatGPT is rolled out "iteratively", starting with text and image features. Then the updated voice mode, which is attracting public attention, arrives at ChatGPT Plus subscribers. That means it is locked behind the paywall for the foreseeable future.

Other uses of the new voice assistant include helping with math homework, learning languages, making dad jokes, talking to another AI, and awkwardly singing happy birthday.
