Final Fantasy 14 Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida says the ongoing DDoS attack on the MMO is the longest and "largest" the game has seen in the past 10 years.
"With DDoS attacks, we believe this is the largest scale and length we have seen this kind of attack since the original Final Fantasy14," Yoshida revealed in the latest letter from the producer's live stream. "Of course, it's the biggest and longest time we've been under these attacks, but Square Enix has a very talented infrastructure team and we're excited to be part of Final Fantasy 14," he said.; They swap teams in rotation.
Yoshida went on to say that the team is working both inside and outside to figure out how to crush the offense and is trying to change its strategy as needed."Instances have caused "somewhere between 1000 and 2000 people" to be cut off at any given time, Yoshida added: "We can't see any sort of significant damage at this time.", And Square Enix will work diligently to protect us from DDoS attacks.
The DDoS problem began in early May with an eye-popping 25-hour long attack on servers in Europe, North America, Japan and Oceania. Since then, they have occurred almost daily, ranging from four hours to 12 hours of attacks. It has been a frustrating experience for many players — especially in the latest Moogle Treasure Trove events, including Deep dungeons, where cutting off at any of them could lead to significant progress being lost.
It's also a worrying omen as we slowly approach Dawntrail's release on 7/2 (or 6/28 if you book early access). Even without the DDoS shenanigans, with the release of Endwalker in 2021, the game was pulled out of sale for 6 weeks as the game collapsed under the weight of an inflated player base, resulting in hours of login queues and servers struggling to stay afloat. It's a rough time, and the idea that a DDoS attack will tear people out of the game during Dawntrail, when the servers may have already burst at the seams, is a horrible idea.
But it definitely seems to be something Yoshida and the team hope to have under control before setting sail to Turial. "But we are aware of the situation and we are working hard to protect us from it, as we are doing our best to apply the necessary measures," he said.
Yoshida concluded the DDoS debate and thanked the players for their patience and encouragement throughout the issue, saying: "The staff have worked hard and I hope they will continue to persevere.
Fortunately, looking at Rodeston, the attack seems to have slowed slightly. The last DDoS-related update was 5/14 and has been cleared for 2 days so far. Fingers crossed it stays that way — I still have to crush the fate of those specters and plunder dungeons before Danwtrail comes out.
