Microsoft announces Copilot+ app ecosystem, with Snapdragon X laptop leading the way exclusively

PC makers like to avoid revolutionary or transformative terms, but following Qualcomm's entry into the PC market and Microsoft's announcement of the Copilot+AI laptop, the market is at a critical inflection point as we've seen for years.

Microsoft has announced Copilot+ PCs, which include its own Surface family. This provides performance to take advantage of the new generation of AI features that appear in Windows11.

Microsoft has announced many AI experiences that are only possible on Copilot+ PCs. These include recalls, Cocreator, and live captions.

Recall is a kind of super "history" tool that runs in the background. It allows you to search for anything you've done on your PC. If the Internet remembers, obviously so will your PC. Cocreator is an art or image generation assistant, but Live Captions works as expected and generates captions in real time. Hopefully, they are better than some of the trash that youtube can offer.

"Copilot+ PCs powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series deliver a breakthrough AI experience and superior battery life-per-power performance to the Windows ecosystem," said Microsoft's Windows+Deba, "This is an inflection point in the Windows PC ecosystem made possible by our deep partnership with Qualcomm. We're excited to launch an innovative Copilot+ Pc experience and device powered by Snapdragon, including Surface."For now, only Snapdragon X processors offer enough performance to qualify as Copilot+ PCs.  Intel and AMD's currently available NPU-powered chips do not meet this threshold, but both companies plan to introduce faster models by the end of the year. Microsoft today announced a new Surface family with Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors.

They promise competitive performance and genuine all-day battery life, so if you're one of the many people still fascinated by AI, they look like a high-quality laptop by itself. They have a Macbook directly in the crosshairs. Copilot+ will be supported by Adobe, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, and djay Pro.

Microsoft says more announcements will follow.

The first Copilot+Pc can be pre-ordered from today, from 6/18. Other companies such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung also offer Copilot+ PCs. We can expect to see most of these on Computex within 2 weeks from now.

Can you sign off wondering if this ecosystem will benefit gamers' have heard mention of things like adaptive boss battles and smarter multiplayer bots and enemies, but that's not going to happen until Nvidia's Tensor core is released in 2018. This is the first time that I've ever seen a video of a woman in a public place. Google has developed a co-op AI agent, but it's still in the research phase.

As such processors are on the way to becoming ubiquitous, it is interesting to see whether or how game developers will utilize Npu.
