CEO of Helldivers 2 Says His Goal After Success Is Simply to Make It the Best Live Game He's Ever Played

A large part of Helldivers 2's appeal lies in the game's ongoing galactic warfare, the push-and-pull between players and enemy factions that sees the liberation of planets, the loss of territory, and casualties on a multi-planetary scale. This conflict is guided and shaped by key imperatives that identify targets and offer rewards. Yesterday's examples are minor classics. They accomplished it in 14 hours.

There are many more layers to how "Hell Diver 2" unfolds the game's story and what surprises it offers. For example, before the mechs even appeared in the game, everyone began to "leak" them in a coordinated effort. Game master Joel has become a community meme (blame Joel if something goes wrong), but Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt is equally prominent, and he regularly engages with players with a winning combination of straight answers and Super Earth promotion involvement.

Today we deal with the former; Pilestedt showed up in response to TheGentlemanCEO (presumably not involved) posting a topic about the game's subreddit "riding a fine line between constructive opinion and bitchy entitlement."

OP went on to list several points where he felt people misunderstood the nature of the live service development and Arrowhead's responsibility to its partners (such as Sony).

"I appreciate your sentiments and contribution," Pilestedt replied. 'Let me add some context. Arrowhead is independently owned by the people who work at the studio and is not beholden to shareholders in the traditional sense. Of course, we have a great partnership with Sony and we agree on goals to be achieved, etc. But there are no mandatory features or requirements per se."

Part of the inspiration for the original topic was the ongoing community discussion about specific bugs that need fixing, and whether these should be prioritized by the studio over the current rapid pace of updates and additions to the game. "We want to provide the best in the industry, and we balance our efforts between fixes and new features." While it is easy to say "just fix and don't add," the reality of competitiveness in this industry is that we must do both to remain relevant.

Pilestedt said Arrowhead is still "figuring it out, the demands and expectations on studios are high, and all eyes are on us. We need to find our own pace and balance.

In the name of freedom, we are free to honor this message. Obviously, it is too early in the life cycle of "Helldivers 2" to make any kind of judgment about "Helldivers 2" as a live title. What I can say for certain, however, is that it is different from other live service games I have played and feels more exciting and dynamic in terms of how it moves players to create collective achievement (and sometimes failure).

Pilestedt later returned to clarify some points; his point about the demands on Arrowhead was not "defensive" but rather "because we know we can do better as a studio: ...... The gaming industry is a complex beast. The gaming industry is a complex beast. We need to remain relevant and keep everyone entertained while we fix things.

"The expectations from our friends at PlayStation are very simple. We trust you."

So does the entire Super Earth of players, and even making this gag demonstrates another of the ongoing attractions of Helldivers 2. One look at the player discussions in "Helldivers 2" and the cause of freedom is immediately championed, players who theorize about the lore are dismissed as "bot sympathizers," and unjustified defiance is marked as treason. No one can deny that "Hell Diver 2" will get into your head, whether or not it will be the greatest work of all time.
