After a 23-year quest, a collector managed to acquire a rare copy of "Castlevania" for $90,100.

After 130 bids, the sale closed and the original NES 1st production new sealed copy of Castlevania sold at auction for $90,100, the highest bid for a raw boxed video game (via GamesRadar).

The winning bidder, who identified himself as minus_worlds on Instagram, posted a photo of the sealed copy with the price tag and Nintendo Gold certification. In the comments, he wrote: "After 23 years of searching, the search is over. I had given up on adding this chalice after years of searching. However, this week I was able to acquire this absolute beauty for my childhood friend and myself."

"This was the first game my mother ever bought me. I still remember the phone call when she bought it. It's a core memory, just like this past week. [I have a couple more plane rides to go, but this beautiful first-print hangtab 'Castlevania' is almost home."

Toward the end of the comments, minus_worlds also thanks some major supporters and another major bidder, Frank Giaramita, who goes by grailmonster, for "the generosity in the defeat of our battle over this amazing, historic work."

Giaramita also thanked the "generous bidders for their support.

On Giaramita's Instagram, he posted a photo of his maximum bid of $90,000, above which he wrote in bold letters, "You did not win this auction." But he doesn't seem too upset about losing: "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Congratulations to the winning bidder (I know him, but he deserved the bid much more than I did)."

But Giaramita not only congratulates minus_worlds, but also theorizes about the potential upsell price: "I am concerned about the future of this piece. It's a $250,000 flip [in my opinion]. As far as I know, this is the highest the raw game has ever sold for."

It's hard to say for sure how much this copy is worth, or whether a buyer would be willing to sell it given its sentimental value, but it clearly has great value.

This is not the only retro game that has sold for exorbitant prices recently. Just last month, the original version of "Burger Time" sold for $11,377, and while not in the same price range, a cancelled version of "TimeSplitters 4" was found on eBay for £525. If you have any old games gathering dust in your attic, you might want to see how much they are worth on eBay.
