With 800,000 copies of "Dwarf Fortress" sold, the new billionaire creator's most expensive purchase was a Honda Civic.

Dwarf Fortress has existed as a free game for nearly 20 years, but the premium version (now with graphics) of 2022 is going strong. It has made Tern and Zach Adams, the original creators of Dwarf Fortress, millionaires, selling over half a million copies as of last March. [At this year's GDC, the brothers told PCG that the game has now sold 800,000 copies and has taken root on more than 1 million wish lists. At this point, one million sales of one of the most profound free-to-play games in existence seems almost certain. Do the brothers have plans to reward themselves when they reach the milestone?

"I mean, we didn't actually think about it (hitting one million sales)," Tarn Adams told PCG.

Now, one good bet is when DF will receive the impending Adventure Mode update.

"We think of it as an update," Tarn said. 'It's not like Baldur's Gate 3 or anything... It's a mild update. But this is the first time I've communicated with people on the wish list. I've never emailed them or anything; there's over a million of them.

So it's quite possible that with the release of Adventure Mode, DF's premium sales will approach one million. 'Maybe we'll have a little party.

"Probably a trip somewhere exotic," Zach adds.

But for now, the brothers are doing what they always do: working on Dwarf Fortress; 800,000 sales or not, the game is still technically in alpha and there is much work to be done.

When PCG asked the two how their newfound financial success has changed them, the answer seemed to be "not much." Tarn appreciated feeling 'comfortable and stable,' and Zach bought a house with his wife. But otherwise,' the most extravagant purchase of the two newly minted billionaires seemed to be a car: "We decided to buy a Honda Civic," Zach says.
