Warner Bros. Announces Fifth "Matrix" Film Following "The Matrix," a Film About Capitalism's Extinction of Culture in Pursuit of Profit

Remember the last movie in the Matrix? It's about how capital encompasses all criticism and turns it into a trendy and infinitely exploitable set of meaningless images and symbols that are disconnected from their original context. You know how we used to lament the way the culture industry couldn't let the good stuff lie dormant and instead pounded every last drop of profit out of every marketable property until there was nothing left but tasteless gray sludge?

That was cool. Anyway, they're making another Matrix movie.

According to Variety, "Matrix 5" (sure to be "The Matrix: Matrix: R-Something" at some point during production), will be the first in the series not directed by one of the Wachowski sisters. Instead, "Martian" screenwriter Drew Goddard will direct. Goddard will also write the script and produce the film with Sarah Esberg, who was a producer on the very good "Moonlight" (IMDb tells me).

And, well, these are all substantial names you are getting. Lana Woschowski is credited as an executive producer, which in Hollywood means paying to have your name in the credits. Aside from that, we still don't know if Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, or any of the new characters from "The Matrix" will be back: we also don't know if Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, or any of the new characters from "The Matrix: The Rebirth" will return.

Because I am a circus and my heart is a clown. To paraphrase Goddard, he has many generally positive words to say about the film: "It is no exaggeration to say that The Matrix changed cinema and my life," he said, and the Wachowskis' "exquisite artistry inspires me daily." [Meanwhile, Warner Bros. executive Jesse Elman said the film is only coming to fruition because Goddard "came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe is a great way to continue the Matrix universe." This is, frankly, a bit hard to believe given everything that was said and done in the previous film, "The Matrix."
