73 Million AT&T Customers' Personal Information, Including Passcodes, Leaked Online

Telecommunications giant AT&T has confirmed that the personal information of 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former customers has been compromised. The stolen data is not uniform, but as AT&T details, it may include "full names, e-mail addresses, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, AT&T account numbers, and passcodes."

AT&T's passcode is a four-digit PIN code, which was reset for the 7.6 million customers who were compromised; AT&T contacted everyone affected by email or letter.

The information apparently dates back to 2019 or possibly earlier, so much of the information relates to former customers; AT&T has stated that there is "no evidence of unauthorized access to the system leading to the theft of data sets."

This may, in fact, be the same data that was offered for sale at a hacking forum in 2021 for prices starting at $200,000, as reported by Bleeping Computer. At the time, AT&T denied that the data belonged to its customers, stating, "Based on today's investigation, it appears that the information posted in the Internet chat rooms was not provided by our system."
