Larian Ends "Baldur's Gate": "I'm going to leave D&D and start making something new.

Bad news for those hoping for a Baldur's Gate 3 expansion, Baldur's Gate 4, and other Larian Studios' Dungeons and Dragons-related titles: at GDC today, Larian CEO Swen Vincke said the company is no longer working on D&D adventures and is now moving on to new ones, he said.

Vincke said in January that he was already working on Larian's next project. However, he did not mention exactly how it will be different, but as far as it goes, it will be an RPG. But it won't be "Baldur's Gate."

"We are a company with big ideas. We are not a company built to make DLC or expansions. We actually tried that a few times. We've actually tried it a few times and it's failed at every turn. It's not our job. Life is too short. Our ambitions are very big. [And like Gustav, Baldur's Gate will always have a warm place in our hearts. We will forever be proud of this game, but we do not intend to keep it going. We are not going to make a new expansion that everyone is expecting. We are not going to make "Baldur's Gate 4" that everyone is expecting. We are going to move on; we are going to move away from D&D and start making something new."

Gustav, Vincke's dog, sometimes called Tav for short, unfortunately passed away in February. Gustav was also the source of Larian's internal codename before "Baldur's Gate 3" was released to the public.

This does not mean that the Baldur's Gate saga is over: no doubt inspired by the huge success of Baldur's Gate 3, Wizards of the Coast's parent company, Hasbro, has recently hinted at developing more D&D video games, and earlier this month announced that it was working on Disney's Dreamlight Valley" studio, Gameloft, announced

that it will produce a new survival life-sim game set in the Forgotten Realms.

And there will no doubt be further updates and patches to "Baldur's Gate 3". But beyond that, it is no longer Larian's problem. "This is a Wizards of the Coast IP, so it is up to Wizards of the Coast to find someone to take it over." We have done our job and for us it is time to get a new puppy."
