As the world's best PC gaming site, we've had enough of indulging in regular browsers and now we want to infiltrate desktop apps as well. That's a joke, but with the latest build of Chrome Canary, we may be able to make that dream a reality. With a few tweaks, you can add an "install page as app" option to the browser, allowing you to drop app shortcuts on your PC desktop (via Android Police).

If we're being completely transparent, which is possible not only with this glorious collection of PC games and PC gaming hardware, but also with any website, Chrome Canary is a daily build version of Google Chrome, typically the browser's It is several steps ahead of the stable release build and often features the absolute latest changes being tested by developers.

The latest version runs an early build of Chrome 124, as opposed to the current stable release build 122. A handy guide to enabling this feature is summarized below, but as a reminder, the Canary build is untested software and may cause a number of issues.

However, if testing goes as planned, Chrome users will know what to expect next.

This feature is an extension of Google's phasing out of Chrome apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux, replacing them instead with Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) that install on the desktop and run as a regular program. And judging by the results, it may not be long before this feature is included in stable builds of Chrome.

If you want to try it out, install Google Canary and enable the following flags by typing the following command in the browser bar:

chrome://flags/#web-app-universal-install

chrome://After restarting your browser, navigate to the website you want to install (we're not judging you, we promise), find "save and share" in the drop-down settings menu, and then "install page as app... " before clicking on "Install Page as an App...

You will then see a confirmation box to confirm your, hopefully exceptional, choice in the website app installation.

Lovely. It has always been possible to create a shortcut to a web page on the desktop and open a browser window, but converting it to an application on the fly makes for a much cleaner and tidier way to access your favorite sites.

Assuming, of course, that you're only trying it for PC Gamer, sites like YouTube and Reddit have had their own PWAs for a while, so if you try the process there, you find the option of slightly different wording I'm sure you will.

Well, we don't like to be behind the times, so if I were you, I would make the process of converting PC Gamer into a functional web app your top priority today. Or wait for a release build, if that feature will be released as a test version. Do it, my friend. I agree.
