I admit it: given that the original Resident Evil 4 has been reissued more times than the Bible and The Little Red Book combined, I had thought that enthusiasm for a full-blown remake might be on the wane. Well, it is what it is. Capcom announced that the remake of RE4 has sold over 7 million copies in less than a year since its release.

Not only that, but the "Resident Evil" series as a whole has sold over 154 million copies since it emerged from its grotesque flesh chrysalis in 1996. Congratulations to Resident Evil for becoming the eighth largest country on earth.

Capcom attributes this success to the "continued support from enthusiastic fans around the world" and says it is the publisher's "flagship game series." It would be nice if one day a gaming company swept us off our feet and attributed its success to "natural fate" or industrial quantities of psilocybin, which is probably something that needs to be written in a press release.

Anyway, RE4 and Resident Evil sales are not tallied by platform. We now live in a world where we can play the RE4 remake and RE: Village on our iPhones; was that what Capcom needed to do to break the 7 million mark after selling just over 6 million copies by the end of 2023?

Unfortunately, we don't know, but one thing is almost certain: there will be more "RE" remakes. Last year, Capcom asked fans what game they wanted to see remade next. After all, with "RE4" done and dusted, and unless Capcom is willing to remake "1," the only mainline games left are "RE5" and "6."

My hope is that they will settle on "Code Veronica," which is still a console adventure focused on Claire and Chris Redfield. Capcom will port the game to other consoles, but the PC version has not been released since the Xbox 360 version; with a year to go before "RE4," we will find out sooner or later what Capcom has in store.
