The news that Elijah Wood would be starring in an animated TV series of "Among Us" was news I could not have wished for. When I woke up to messages from friends sharing this announcement, I initially thought it was some sort of hard-drive gag.
The upcoming TV show is based on the game of the same name that brought the Internet to its knees in 2020 when Twitch streamers, YouTubers, and even some politicians played party games during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The show follows the same formula as the game, with crew members being replaced by alien shapeshifters (known as imposters) in the series. This murderous crew causes chaos and attempts to eradicate other innocent crew members. The remaining players must sniff out the impostor and cast him out into the dark void if they want to survive. Basically, they are space werewolves.
Elijah Wood stars as Green, an unpaid intern who, according to his character description, is "happy to be there" and does whatever he is told. Other actors lending their voices to the series include Randall Park (of "Fresh Off the Boat" and "The Interview" fame), who will play Red, the captain of the Skeld and apparently an "upwardly mobile dropout" who is a terrible people pleaser. Ashley Johnson (of "The Last of Us" and "Blindspot" fame) is the safety-minded head of security, and Yvette Nicole Brown (of "Community" and "The Odd Couple" fame) is the crew's personnel officer, perhaps best suited to play an imposter.
After Elijah Wood was announced, he took to Twitter to express his excitement for his upcoming role! Very excited to be a part of this production." But most people who saw the tweet had a similar reaction to mine, with some asking if this was satire and others simply saying it was: sus [Titmouse, known for "Big Mouth" and "Star Trek: Lower Deck," will animate. Owen Dennis will serve as creator and executive producer; according to Variety, development began in June 2023, but no release date has been set.
It's hard to get too excited about the idea of an "Among Us" TV show. However, Elijah Wood's history of working on weird but wonderful films like "Over the Garden Wall" gives us hope that this series will be something great and not just a rehash of a 2020 YouTuber collaboration.
