In terms of buying advice, there is really only one piece of wisdom to impart here. If you haven't played these games before, don't start with "Lightning Returns. This is not simply because you'll be playing this game without experiencing the story beats of its predecessor (you can easily catch up on YouTube compilations if you're so inclined), but because the game's surprisingly open design and rigorous, oppressive It's because it's a very complex game that combines doomsday clock game over mechanics. I won't go into in-game details to avoid spoilers, but in "Lightning Returns," you only have a set number of days to beat the game and win, and if you don't beat it, it's game over.

Failure unlocks the cool (and very necessary unless you use a guide) New Game Plus mode. Lightning Returns is personally my favorite of the trilogy, but the weird structure and premise make it the wrong place to start; I recommend starting with XIII, or even XIII-2 (which takes place three years after the original), and then going back to the original, which is a bit more challenging and more fun.

Finally, a few words about these PC game versions of the XIII series: better frame rate and resolution, plenty of DLC content, and my favorite, unlocked Japanese voice-overs with English subtitles (a perfect combo IMO), the original The PC version of the game is packed with unique perks that the PS3 version did not get.
