PS4's classic horror game "Until Dawn" may finally be coming to PC

As Sony continues to loosen its grip on its library of exclusive titles, a classic PS4 horror game may be coming to PC: Until Dawn, Supermassive's cinematic slasher romp that launched on consoles in 2015 and whose success spawned a slew of similarly structured games from the studio, such as Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry.

While no official announcement has been made yet, Dealabs (via IGN) reports that a port has been in development for at least a year and will be announced within the next few weeks.

The timing makes a lot of sense: a week ago, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a film adaptation of Until Dawn was in the works by David F. Sandberg, director of "Shazam!" and horror screenwriter of such creepy films as "It" and "Annabelle" Until Dawn" by Gary Dauberman is in the works. Given that the game has been out for almost nine years and has no sequel, re-releasing it on PC (and PS5) would be a smart move to get more attention.

For those who don't know: Until Dawn is structured like a slasher film, with friends gathering at a lodge one year after two friends go missing during a previous party. Players control each member of the group of friends at various stages of their lives, shaping the story and making choices that determine who lives and who dies as the gathering turns into a bloody nightmare. As far as I have been able to play, nearly everyone met a grisly end.

QTEs are used extensively, and Supermassive had a lot of fun with QTEs. There are sequences where you try to move the controller as little as possible so as not to reveal your hiding place, which is harder than you might imagine when you are absolutely bricking it.

So far it is not clear what will be changed for the port. The visual upgrades seem like a reasonable expectation, but the original game still looks great. The frame rate fluctuations were numerous and somewhat disturbing; the later Supermassive games released on PC were a smoother experience.

Although it seems unlikely, what I would really like to see is proper co-op play; the later Supermassive titles had multiple modes, allowing two players to play simultaneously, as well as a party mode where you pass the controller. However, while Until Dawn is entirely single-player, it is possible to emulate party mode by unofficially assigning a character to a friend and then handing them the controller when they are ready to play.

No word yet on a release date, but that may be revealed when the game is officially announced.
