Only four months after its early access launch, Nexon's "full-contact sword action" game "Warhaven" is shutting down.

The team-based sword and sorcery brawler "Warhaven" launched in Early Access on Steam on September 20, 2023. Today, just four months later, Nexon announced that it will shut down permanently in April.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce today that we are ending Warhaven's live service," Nexon wrote on Steam.

"We have put a lot of thought and effort into creating a game that will be familiar and enjoyed for a long time. Unfortunately, however, we have decided to say goodbye as of April 5, 2024. We apologize for not being able to give you better news."

"We are very sorry that we could not give you better news.

Warhaven, when first seen in 2022, looked like a cross between Chivalry and For Honor. The game features 16 players teaming up to brawl with blades, bows, and magic, with six different characters bringing unique weapons and abilities to battle. Players also have the ability to transform into god-like immortals, granting them devastating powers and, if they are lucky, turning the tide of a losing battle in a flash.

Although it looked promising for a medieval melee game, even as a free-to-play game, Warhaven struggled to find an audience. At launch, the game peaked at 8,850 concurrent players, but quickly dropped to a few hundred, and user reviews on Steam were scattered: players complained of balance issues, server instability, and an XP cap that artificially slowed the progression of battle paths.

Several negative reviewers also complained about changes made to Warhaven between the beta testing sessions and the early access release. One reviewer stated, "I loved this game in the beta. But in the release, squad sizes were reduced to three, and even worse, you can only reincarnate into Immortal once per game. It's incredibly disappointing.

"Bring back the beta," one commenter said, describing the Early Access release as a "scaled-down" version of the beta build.

"Immortal was chaotic even in beta, but it was fun then. Now there is no "fun."

Nexon said that sales of the World Pass, Warhaven's battle pass, will stop today and that "exact details of the schedule" will be revealed later, although it suggests that perhaps some in-game farewell events may be on the way.
