"Call of Duty" has a new shortcut for mouse and keyboard users trying to activate Aim Assist: Alt + F4. According to a tweet posted on the official Twitter account of Call of Duty Updates on Tuesday, the game has beefed up its security system so that if you find yourself using a tool that turns on the game's assist when using a mouse, the MW3.exe itself and As well, the game will now automatically force the game to close. This new countermeasure applies to all Modern Warfare 2, 3 and Warzone. ["Our security detection systems now target players using tools to activate aim assist while using mouse and keyboard," tweeted The Call of Duty application will close if detected. Continued attempts make it worse: "Repeated use of these tools may lead to further account actions.
Aim assist is, of course, a tricky topic in multiplayer shooters. In the past, having a mouse in hand was a direct advantage in FPS over fools using gamepads, but with the implementation of technology that assists those with controllers in aiming, the situation has become more ambiguous. There is always a balance to be struck: too much and you are effectively handing gamepad users an aimbot created by the developers; too little and everyone playing on the couch will experience endless frustration at the hands of KBAM players.
The combination of the mouse's suitability for clicking on a person's head and the terrifying power of the controller's aim assist is clearly too powerful for the developer. But there are still plenty of hardware and software hacks out there that a bad player will have to try anyway. That's why COD is making things worse and promising to zero in on players if they smell cheating.
Warzone players believe the update is specifically about reWASD, effectively tricking the game into thinking the keyboard is actually a gamepad. The same multiplayer FPS, The Finals, also took action against the tool this month, and for good reason: users using reWASD can expect a crash to their desktop the next time they launch the game.
