Blizzard reveals how severe the nerfs to Sorcerers and Barbarians in Diablo 4 will be next season and outlines a new balance philosophy.

It's official: Barbarians and Sorcerers will not rule Sanctuary in the next season of Diablo 4. In a developer stream today, Blizzard said that tomorrow's patch notes will include fixes for bugs that fuel the strongest builds in the game and changes that elevate the weakest.

Barbarians who spent the season boning bosses with hammer blows actually benefited from the skill upgrade, whether they put in the points or not. Barbarians using Hammer of the Ancients received a large damage boost of 30% multiplier for free. This may be corrected when Season 3 launches on January 23, and HotA may take over as the best skill in the game. Similarly, the orbiting light ball of destruction that nearly every sorcerer has abused this season will not cut through enemies quite so fast once Blizzard fixes a bug related to the attack speed bonus from the enhanced light ball skill upgrade.

The nerf is rather light after the gut punch of Season 1 Patch 1.1, where Blizzard dramatically lowered everyone's power by rethinking how damage is calculated. Jackson reiterated a promise Blizzard made in an emergency stream after last year's brutal update.

Going forward, fixing bugs will be a priority, said senior class designer Adam Jackson; Blizzard doesn't want to ruin anyone's fun in the new season, but if something isn't working right, they will try to fix it quickly. But if a build is wildly overpowered by something Blizzard has overlooked, the decision to nerf it will be based on "qualitative kinds of feedback" from players and how much it affects the rest of the game." We're really going to try to lean on the side of no change unless we feel it's really necessary to keep the game healthy."

"Our strategy with players is to communicate early and often," says Jackson.

"Especially when it comes to nerfs, we want to let them know what's coming and what we have in mind.

Tomorrow, Blizzard will release full patch notes for Season of the Construct, but Jackson teased some of the biggest changes in the stream.

We'll dig into this first when Diablo 4 Season 3 kicks off next week on January 23.
