Amplitude, the "Endless Space and Humankind" studio, is celebrating its 13th birthday and to mark the occasion is giving away a free Steam version of Endless Legend, an underrated fantasy 4X released in 2014. Face Death on Friday morning.

To get this game, go to the Amplitude Studios community site and follow a little procedure. After creating an account and verifying your email, you will need to go into your account settings and link it to Steam. Once that is done, go back to the page linked above and click on the "Endless Legend" image in the middle of the page to get your free Steam key.

It's a bit long winded, at least it was when I tried it, but Endless Legend is worth it. Released in 2014, when the world was still young and dinosaurs roamed the earth, the game won PCG's coveted design award at that year's GOTY Awards. Those who have played in the genre for years praised its willingness to "build and remix [old 4X elements] in a way that is of particular interest."

I have a personal recommendation as well; I've always appreciated Amplitude's games from a bit of a distance; Endless Space has intrigued me for longer than I care to admit, with its distinct factions that each play very differently, and its gorgeous art style, but getting stuck in Whenever I try to, it always slips away. I had no such problems with Endless Legend, and felt that I was able to get into the mechanics more smoothly without sacrificing depth.

According to Amplitude, this promotion is "while supplies last," but they reassure us that "quantities are not small." Still, I would go out and buy one right away. You can get a lot of games without spending a lot of money.
