In 1895, our forefathers watched the train arrive at La Ciota Station; in 1969, families gathered to watch mankind take its first steps beyond the surface of the earth; in 2022, the Master Chief had sex; in 1963, the Master Chief was a man of the world.
It was the television event of the century, but it turns out not everyone was on board. In a recent chat with SFX magazine (via GamesRadar), Master Chief actor Pablo Schreiber revealed that he was adamantly against John 117 and his relationship with Covenant spy Makhi. He was really adamantly against it. He is not mincing words here, telling SFX that it was a "big mistake" to have John and Makhi hook up in the show's first season.
Schreiber makes it sound like he really dug in his heels too, but to no avail. 'But I am who I am. I don't write scripts. I just give my opinion." Unfortunately, "it was not heeded."
Shriver echoes the sentiments of many fans regarding the thorny issue of Big John's love life. When the episode in question aired in 2022, the fan community was not thrilled with this narrative decision and felt that it misunderstood the character from the game. You can still find traces of this uproar by Googling "Master Chief sex Reddit," as I did at work.
In a Reddit thread titled "That is non canon and we don't need to talk about it.", "We exist in a world where we witnessed Master Chief lose his virginity ." (We exist in a world where we witnessed Master Chief lose his virginity) topped the comments.
I tease because, after all, the notion of big green men of steel making love is quite ridiculous, but some of the fan criticisms have a point. Aside from the prevailing theory that Master Chief's lack of interest in sex was due to his Spartan training, there were many who pointed out that Makhi was essentially a prisoner of war in the context of the show at the time, an issue that the show never once mentioned.
"Who wrote this? Who wrote it? And who allowed it to be made into a movie?' It took too many people to OK it without good reason," asked an irate Halo fan named Matrix0523 on Reddit last year.
Perhaps the combined backlash of both fans and Schreiber himself will cause Paramount to change course on the "Halo" TV show scenario, which will return as Season 2 on February 8. Or perhaps they won't. Love always finds a way.
