When Diablo 4 players aren't crushing bosses with a single blow or becoming invincible with amulets, most of their time is spent squinting at their loot. Now that items are overflowing from every chest and monster since Season 2, inventories fill up quickly, and the task of sorting through that gear has become one of the worst activities in the game.
Blizzard is aware of this problem and plans to fix it in Season 4 with a major overhaul of item stats. In the meantime, however, items will drop more frequently at higher item powers when Season 3 launches next Tuesday.
In Diablo 4, item power determines whether an equipment's status is Legendary or Rare. There are different numerical breakpoints that help quickly determine if an item is worth scrutinizing. If you see a glove with an item power of 600 at level 100, you know immediately that it is trash. In Diablo 4's new era of plentiful loot drops, a lot of time was spent trashing gear with low item power.
Activities like Hellside, once a great way to find upgrades, became so unpredictable that most players were stuck farming bosses over and over again to guarantee high item power loot. The Tier 100 Nightmare dungeon, which was supposed to be the ultimate test of the build, only had a chance to drop 925 item power, the highest tier loot.
In Season 3, monsters in Tier 90+ nightmare dungeons now always drop Item Power 925 equipment. Also, Tier 46+ nightmare dungeons will drop more loot within their range; Blizzard is finally rewarding players who can reliably run the most difficult dungeons in a way that ensures they can gear up. Until the big changes in Season 4, we'll still have to skip over useless stats like "movement speed after defeating elites," but Season 3 will shorten the effort it takes to get items worth looking at in the first place.
Sadly, Uniques, Diablo 4's most powerful item tier, is still boss-bound. The upgrade path at the end of Season 3 will keep you beating Echo of Duriel hundreds of times for a chance to get an uber-unique and a pile of 925 equipment. A new Spider Companion and a seasonal vault dungeon might make the process go a little faster, though. In an interview with PC Gamer last week, system and game designer Sean White said that Seneschal should rival previous seasonal powers, but that players may find skill combinations beyond Blizzard's expectations. 'We'll see what happens,' he said."
