Ten years later, the greatness of Crystal Dynamics' 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider became even more apparent to me: the 18-rated game incorporated the campy, bright, cartoonish Lara Croft of the earlier game and instead offered a dark, hyper dark, hyper-violent, and sometimes gripping coming-of-age origin story with a strong female protagonist.

Yes, there is no doubt that this game and its sequels "Rise of the Tomb Raider" and "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" owe much to the excellent "Uncharted" series, but Crystal Dynamics offered an action-adventure platformer with a decidedly different tone, protagonist and supporting cast. This was a hit.

Fast forward to now, and the reboot of its blockbuster "Tomb Raider" is now $2.99 / £2.49 on Steam. I picked it up myself and thought I'd bring it to the attention of the PC Gamer community, as I think it's a great PC gaming experience to get into during the January gaming slump. You can check out the full game details below.

If you're already a big Tomb Raider fan, I also recommend checking out the series on CDKeys. While the Tomb Raider reboot isn't that cheap, there are plenty of options for buying editions of the game (and its sequels) bundled with bonus DLC for a bit more. Many of these extras are cosmetic, but there are a few additional playable tombs that can be raided, for example; here are my picks from CDKeys' offerings.

I also noticed that the sequels, "Rise of the Tomb Raider" and "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," are also heavily discounted on Steam. I played and completed Rise of the Tomb Raider, and while the scenario is not as impactful as the first game, it has more action and tomb raiding, and the graphics have been upgraded a bit; if you have $6 to spare, it is worth a look.

As for Tomb Raider's current run, my PC gaming rig with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and an RTX 3090 Ti was able to produce an average frame rate of 118.7 fps with all settings set to "Ultimate" . So I can almost guarantee that this game will run perfectly on your system. The two sequels are also improved versions of the same base engine, so I am confident that they will run fine on basically any modern gaming PC.

More information on this entire "Tomb Raider" game trilogy can be found in PC Gamer's "Tomb Raider" review, "Rise of the Tomb Raider" review, and "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" review.
