The Finals is the latest competitive FPS, and while its gunplay and movement have garnered much praise, it is the carousel of physical objects and dynamic destruction that truly makes the game a crowd pleaser. Beneath the sweaty game modes and leaderboards lies the spirit and toolset of an immersive sim, and nowhere is this more evident than in the recent rise of Goo Gun.
The Goo Gun is the primary gadget of the final, available only to the heavy class. The Goo Gun fires a sticky goo that hardens on impact and can create makeshift bridges, walls, and floors. This is a good thing, because other heavy gadgets that occupy the same slots, such as mesh shields and charge abilities, are definitely more useful. Additionally, if a quick bridge or wall is needed, goo canisters placed throughout the map can also get the job done.
Recently, however, players have been experimenting with dedicated goo launchers to discover their hidden advantages.
As demonstrated by Reddit user RaconBang and others, the goo gun is essentially a heavy version of a stun gun. Shooting the goo into an enemy will freeze them momentarily in place, no matter what they are doing. It's not always easy, since you have to hit them directly, but once you get the enemy to stick to the goo glove, you can keep them goo-glued faster than they can break the goo glove, effectively trapping them in place. While this tactic may seem infuriating to the enemy at the other end of the line, it is amusing to watch players lose their sanity in real time as they realize they are powerless against the blocking power of the goo.
Some players have taken advantage of the googun's stun ability to enhance their sledgehammer play. Gouge the opponent, close the distance, and then stomp him with a heavy blow. If they are in the right place at the right time, they can goo their squad in the air to stop their momentum and watch them fall to their death.
Witnessing goo failures is also fun. One player witnessed a spire of goo spinning under the roof until it became a destructible goo nad. Another squad accidentally built a flying goo bridge through a building during the beta, and another squad even had a game panic when they overcrowded a small space with goo, allowing them to walk through walls.
The annoying stun effect on enemies may not be what Embark Studios intended, but the Goo Gun is a shining example of how players can find unexpected brilliance in even the most mundane tools. reactive and physics like The Finals based world, it becomes doubly true. While a simple mesh shield is probably still a superior capability most of the time, it is an undeniable fact that the Goo Gun is more fun.
