Survival game "Rust" finally gets a backpack after 10 years, but pets "won't be released this year

"How do you make a backpack?" So, when you start a new survival game, you may be asking yourself "How do I make an axe?" "Where do I get water?" How do I make a campfire?" and the all-important "What the hell is that sound?" This is usually the fifth question, after.

Carrying resources, food, tools and junk in your pockets tends to quickly run out of space, so a backpack with extra inventory slots is an essential early-game survival necessity.

Not so in Rust. This multiplayer survival game has been around for as long as 10 years, but the addition of backpacks is a recent development. It just took a while, he said.

Better late than never! According to Facepunch Studios' latest developer blog, the backpacks are scheduled to arrive on February 1, but those who can't wait that long will be able to test them at Rust's staging branch next week. Nice.

This isn't the only thing coming to Rust in 2024. Updates will include new monuments, tutorials for new players, a clan system, and something just as exciting as backpacks: bikes. There are also 12 upcoming monthly updates, including new biomes and procedurally generated caves.

Now for the sad news: the pet that was teased for 2022 will not be coming to Rust anytime soon.

"If you've been following our public commit page, you know that we've been working on the pet for several months and then abruptly stopped. For a number of reasons, we are cancelling this project and will not be releasing it this year," says Alistair McFarlane, producer of Facepunch. Our goal is still to bring pets to Rust, but there are a few obstacles we need to overcome before we can do that."

Apparently, getting furry followers will require improvements to Rust's AI system, and the studio is looking for an AI programmer; by 2025, you may finally be able to run around Rust with a rover.
