First "Cities: Skylines 2" Performance Patch Now Available on Steam

Cities: According to developer Colossal Order, this patch does not solve all the problems with the new city-building sim, but it seems to be a start.

Cities: Cities: Skylines 2 has many important improvements from the original game, but it also suffers from performance issues, including low and erratic frame rates, hiccups, and complete crashes. Colossal Order warned players to "manage performance expectations" prior to release, but that did not soften the blow: complaints on Steam and Reddit abound, with many players complaining that "this game is basically an early access release."

That couldn't be further from the truth: Colossal Order had recently recognized the performance issues, but decided to go ahead anyway, on schedule, because "we've seen enough feedback from players who are enjoying the game that it would be more unfair to delay the launch." He stated that they decided to release the game.

"We know we will continue to work on the game and do our best to resolve any issues as soon as possible, The studio said.

The studio said, "Cities: I mean, it still runs fine three years after you upgrade your PC. However, they also promise that most of the problems players are encountering are "not deeply rooted in the foundation of the game" and can be improved and fixed.

As a first step in that direction, a handful of optimizations and fixes were made today. It's not much of a patch, but Rome was not built in a day. (It took 1,229 years, apparently.) Hopefully the Cities: Cities: Skylines 2 patch will flow a bit faster than that.)

Patch notes:

Some of these fixes are consistent with recommendations in our guide for improving Cities: Cities: Skyline 2 performance: for example, one of our suggestions is to disable "depth-of-field mode" but perhaps it could remain enabled after this patch.

While it is too early to judge the effects of the update at this time, initial reactions seem to be mostly positive: some Steam users have stated that installing the patch has reduced GPU usage, and players on the Paradox forums have also reported improvements. Colossal Order said that the degree of improvement will vary depending on the hardware. At this time, we recommend trying this update with lower settings to see what kind of fps you see."

Currently, the patch is only available on Steam, but Colossal Order said it is working to make it available to Windows Store users as soon as possible. They also ask that players report crashes and bugs on their support forums.
