On National Black Cat Day, a game about a black cat who is also a gray-haired detective from the 1950s will be free on GOG.

It's almost Halloween, so GOG is having a Halloween sale, with discounts on over 3,000 games. And, as is often the case, there will be one giveaway. This time it's "Blacksad: Under the Skin," the story of John Blacksad, a private detective investigating a dark corruption scandal in the heart of 1950s New York City.

The twist in this story is that John Blacksad is a cat. He is a bipedal cat in a trench coat, but a cat nonetheless. Black cats are the subject of myth and superstition to this day, and of course are strongly associated with the dark autumn ritual we know as Halloween.

GOG sees no clear connection between National Black Cat Day and Blacksad's giveaway, so it may just be coincidental fun timing, but either way, it's a decent game and it's free, which is a big plus, so get it before October 30.

GOG's Halloween sale runs a little longer, through November 1. Here are a few of my favorites, fitting the pumpkin patch theme:

Oddly enough, Clive Barker's "Undying" is not on sale, but it's pretty cheap at the regular price and not on Steam, so I'll put it out there anyway. The first half is definitely interesting, although the last part of the book is pretty empty.

So, to recap: National Black Cat Day is October 27, Blacksad is free until October 30, Halloween is October 31, and GOG's Halloween sale ends November 1. And for those who don't know, October 29 is also National Cat Day in the US.

And finally, here's a picture of my cat. She is pure white, but believe me, her heart is as black as the midnight sun.
