Alan Wake 2 is the horror game of the moment, and with Halloween just around the corner, now is the perfect time. This weekend is the perfect time to dress up in something pumpkin spiced, look cautiously left and right for black cats, and dive into the spooky game.

But if you don't have a rig that can handle "Alan Wake 2" or the cash on hand for it, "The Evil Within 2" is the perfect runner-up.

When the creator of "Resident Evil" makes a survival horror game, we pay attention; we liked "The Evil Within" well enough, but "The Evil Within 2" is the realm of good horror. We gave it an 80% in our review, but we think our love for "The Evil Within 2" will only grow as time goes on. Like Resident Evil, this survival horror game strikes the right balance between interesting camp and actual scares. We wrote years later, "The Evil Within 2 is a modern cult classic, an erratic and bizarre horror game that deserves far more praise than it received back in 2017."

Unlike its linear predecessor, The Evil Within 2 introduces a somewhat open world structure, with large areas that can be freely explored or taken on side missions. These areas fit well with the game's stealth system, and as I mentioned in my review, it feels like a mix of "a throwback to the PS2 era and an ingenious sequel. It's a great Halloween game, especially for the low price of free.
