Ubisoft clarifies that it will not delete inactive accounts that have purchased games.

After its policy was called into question over the weekend, a Ubisoft spokesperson told PC Gamer that the company does not delete inactive accounts along with purchased games.

Using the account deletion notice as evidence, anti-DRM advocates recently claimed on Twitter that Ubisoft deletes inactive accounts, including games, if they are left in place for too long. Ubisoft's official support Twitter account responded to the tweet by saying, "We don't want you to lose access to your games. Ubisoft's support site also did not mention that accounts connected to the game are exempt from deletion, simply stating that Ubisoft may "close inactive accounts over time" to maintain its database.

Naturally, all of this led one to believe that Ubisoft was indeed deleting inactive accounts connected to its games, but the company now states that this is not the case. Ubisoft's support page has been updated as follows: "Accounts associated with valid Ubisoft subscriptions or PC games purchased on the Ubisoft Store are not subject to deletion.

It is still unclear why Ubisoft support did not immediately deny the initial claim that inactive accounts playing purchased games could be suspended and subsequently deleted for inactivity when they responded on Twitter. Ubisoft's full statement on the matter is as follows:

"For many years now, we have been implementing an account deletion process that complies with the requirements of the GDPR (Article 5.1(e) regarding the obligation to limit data retention periods). Our policy is in line with legal requirements and industry standards. This measure also serves to protect players from fraudulent activity.

Account deletions follow a very strict process. Therefore, before an account is deleted, the following four criteria are considered:

In any case, before the deletion becomes permanent, three e-mails will be sent to the player within 30 days, offering to restore the account. Additionally, if a user attempts to log in during the 30-day window, they will automatically receive a warning and a link to reactivate their account."
