It took nearly a year and a half, but finally a portable gaming PC with a Steam Deck-like trackpad is on its way: the Ayaneo Kun is the latest product to appear on Indiegogo, with an official launch scheduled for the end of August and featuring the nearly ubiquitous Ryzen 7 7840U APU equipped with a Ryzen 7 7840U APU.
These trackpads were the only thing, aside from the somewhat intangible benefits of SteamOS, that set Valve's handheld apart from the slew of AMD-powered devices that followed. However, this twin pad, placed under the thumbstick, aims to provide exactly the kind of mouse-like functionality for PC gaming.
The original Steam Deck trackpad was made from the ruins of an old Steam controller, and while I am not yet and forever convinced how effective it is at mimicking the classic mouse and keyboard controls of an FPS, it plays really well with a controller strategy and management games that can't, it gives the mobile device gamer much more control.
You can play "Crusader Kings III" on a handheld device, but it's not fun. However, even the Steam Deck's tiny trackpad provides a pretty decent mouse-like experience.
Ayaneokun aims to bring the round "innovative dual intelligent touchpad" to big-boy handhelds, instead of Valve's square pad. Dual Intelligent Touchpad," but it will be the first Windows handheld with a touchpad design.
This is not the only thing that makes the Kung superior or outstanding. It has large hooves. They are larger than a steam deck, which Ayaneo says is designed for "semi-mobile scenarios." Basically, you won't be putting it in your pocket when you're out and about. [But it does have an 8.4-inch screen with a native resolution of 1600p, which helps justify the Kun's special scale, as does the addition of a 75Wh battery, which is "a very nice addition. This is larger than the ROG Ally and Steam Deck and heavier than the AOKZOE A1 Pro with its 65Wh battery.
The larger screen may increase battery capacity. I have been happily gaming this chip at 1200p, but 1600p may be too much for the Radeon 780M GPU's 12 compute units.
I'm still curious to know how this monster handheld feels in person, how much it costs, and how much it weighs. But what I like is that Ayaneo continues to stick to these different form factors.
Because there is another Ryzen 7 7840U-powered device, the Ayaneo Air 1S, shipping in August. This is a 5.5-inch 1080p device, smaller and almost lighter than a Nintendo DS. There is also a thin and lightweight version, which is very thin at 18mm, but has a battery of only 28Wh, which will struggle to last. Even the non-thin and lightweight version has only a 38Wh battery option and will have a tough time running games.
Also announced was the Ayaneo Slide, a gaming handheld with an angle-adjustable sliding screen and an RGB backlit keyboard underneath. However, this will be released after the Kun and will be available closer to the end of the year.
This means that many Ryzen 7 7840U machines will be released, but many different handheld gaming PCs with attractive spec lists and form factors could be released and should fit most playtimes.
