One prominent tech leaker claims that the Nvidia RTX 4090 Ti has been canceled. However, it may be a bit harsh to call this a cancellation, as no confirmation or announcement has been made. At any rate, it is reported that there will be no big Ada beyond the top end of the existing RTX 40 series stack.
And honestly, I don't see how anyone could cry about that, especially given the ludicrous girth of quad-slot coolers that are regularly talked about on social media. I mean, who has room for a 600W graphics card of that magnitude in their rig?
But that may not be the most interesting part of Kopite7Kimi's tweet.
There are many reasons why Nvidia would do this, the most common being spare chips that don't make the grade as a high-spec card. However, given that the company recently announced a memory-intensive version of the RTX 4060 Ti, it may be possible that the green team is doing this to get more memory on these two GPUs.
The tweet clearly states: "Some lower grade chips in the AD103 and AD106 will be different versions of the RTX 4070 and 4060. [AD103 is currently only used on the desktop RTX 4080, while AD106 runs on the 8GB and 16GB versions of the RTX 4060 Ti. This means that we may see a 16GB RTX 4070 that makes good use of the RTX 4080's 256-bit bus, but expecting a 16GB version of the RTX 4060 seems a bit optimistic, given its low position in the current GPU stack
But the RTX 4060 is a very good choice for the GPU stack.
The counterargument to this, however, is that a potentially $699 RTX 4070 16GB card looks odd when placed below a $799 RTX 4070 Ti 12GB card. And an RTX 4070 with a 256-bit bus and 16GB of VRAM would be fantastic.
Nvidia has a long history of using scaled-down versions of higher-end chips on lower-spec cards without changing core counts or memory specifications. Therefore, even if the rumors of new RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 cards are in fact true, it is very likely that there will be no real difference between the earlier versions and the newer cards with adjusted GPUs.
Returning to the RTX 4090 Ti, which is now said to be unrealized, it was a huge card that was said to use almost a full AD102 GPU with 18,176 cores compared to the RTX 4090's 16,384 cores, but with a 384-bit bus and the same 24GB GDDR6X memory.
And it was supposed to come with a ridiculous cooler that occupied four PCIe slots and probably required building a specific concrete foundation under the motherboard. However, some believe that the massive GPU chiller was actually just a test board for the Ada.
Still, the RTX 4090 Ti was expected to have a 600W TGP and require two 16-pin power connectors. If that beast started to melt, we could be in trouble.
No reason has yet been suggested as to why development of this card was halted, but in the current GPU situation, there seems little need for another super high-end GPU when we are suffering from a shortage of good low-end graphics cards. as for PR, the RTX 4090 Ti could be discontinued now, it probably would not have worked out so well.
