Gunfire Games' co-op soul-like shooter sequel Remnant 2 seems to be doing well, already doubling its predecessor's peak concurrent player count; SteamDB's peak concurrent player count is 109,053, more than double Remnant's 48,289: When Remnant: From the Ashes was released in August 2019, the number of players online at any one time was 48,289.
As Eurogamer discovered, this means that Remnant 2's launch weekend peak was higher than recent big AAA titles like Resident Evil Village and Battlefield 2042.
This is an endorsement for Remnant, which blends the soul-like genre with a third-person shooter and looting formula that bears no resemblance to Destiny, giving it a very different worldview and rhythm. Some players have encountered a variety of bugs, ranging from game-breaking to annoying, but the sheer number of people playing the game should not be underestimated. [We launched "Remnant II" on July 25, and we are humbled and grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response from the community. Your support and enthusiasm for Remnant II has been truly inspiring. We are aware that a very small percentage of players have encountered various levels of bugs. We know that encountering bugs and glitches can be frustrating and can interfere with your excitement for the game. We take these issues very seriously and our team is working to identify and address them as quickly as possible," Remnant 2 Director of Development Ben Gabbard said in a Steam note.
Rick Lane liked Remnant 2 quite a bit in his 84/100 PC Gamer review, praising its diversity and excitement.
"If variety is the spice of life, Remnant 2 is a blazing hot video game vindaloo. You can barely go half an hour without having some strange mystery box thrown at your feet, and it's only half of that time that the contents of that box pop out and kill you. For someone like me who has a deep distrust of the Skinner-box-like feedback loop of cooperative loot shooters, "Remnant 2" completely sidesteps my cynicism about the genre. It does what I look for in a game: a unique and exciting adventure with friends.
With this excitement, you'll want to participate in blasting monsters, discovering secrets, looting, and solving riddles like the soul of Remnant 2. These are the kind of "don't always use the biggest gun" things we need to be reminded of on a daily basis.
Remnant 2 is available on ArcGames, Epic Games, and Steam.
