The Pixel Remaster series has given the Final Fantasy classic a modern reincarnation on Steam with a whole new look, but the Final Fantasy 14 team wants to add another way for players to get back to the roots of the series. If you've ever wanted to play a Final Fantasy within a Final Fantasy, Yoshida might just have your back.

At the 2023 Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival press conference, director and producer Naoki Yoshida was asked if there was any chance that older Final Fantasy titles would be playable in the MMO. This idea is similar to games like "Animal Crossing," where special items can be used to play old Nintendo classics in the house. Yoshida not only thought about this idea, but also discussed it with his team.

"We've been trying this for about a year and a half," he said. We also thought that since the "Final Fantasy Pixel Remastered" series is coming out, it would be cool if we could play it on a gold saucer or even on property.

Yoshida explained that the team went so far as to test the idea, but getting Pixel Remasters into FF14 became complicated. He said, "We realized that Pixel Remasters runs on middleware. Because Pixel Remasters runs on middleware, to implement it in FF14 would require building a separate system that could play the middleware in the game. In other words, you would have to build a game system and then play the game system within the game system. ...... It's a strange configuration. Our Final Fantasy 14 team is ...... I love them, but they are crazy...... I don't think they're that crazy."

Yoshida continued, half-jokingly, that if they could get a few more super-genius programmers, it might pave the way for adding playable Final Fantasy masterpieces inside the FF14 house or the Gold Saucer amusement park. He even went so far as to ask for resumes on the off-chance that there might be a Warrior of Light who could offer suggestions.

However, Yoshida noted that if you want this feature to be offered outright, you have to make it work somehow as a business. He emphasized that there was a question as to whether a cash store could be an option for an arcade enclosure-style feature.

"We might be able to make Final Fantasy 1 through 3 free. So maybe 4. We might have to figure out how to make it a business, though."
