Best Gaming Notebook PC Form Factor, New Player Joins Legion

Lenovo has announced a 14-inch, RTX 4060-powered gaming laptop. Since Lenovo currently holds the top spot in our Best Gaming Laptops guide, we have high hopes for the slim and frankly quite stylish upcoming Lenovo Legion Slim 5.

Not only is this Lenovo Legion's first foray into the world of OLED gaming laptops, but it's also in a 14-inch form factor, which is what we're really hoping for: a more current-generation gaming laptop that is actually portable.

Currently, there are not many 14-inch offerings in the laptop space. Currently, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 holds the title of "best 14-inch gaming laptop". As one of the most portable form factors, this is a high hurdle, but with CPU and GPU heat only 93°C and 85°C, respectively, it is clear that cramming new hardware into a small chassis is a challenge for manufacturers. Our Dave was unsurprisingly enamored with the Razer Blade 14, especially given Razer's track record with portable machines, the main contender for the slim Legion Slim 5 current model as seen in

. And Razer did, in fact, manage to keep things normal with the Blade's 140W RTX 4070, recording a maximum of 73°C in our tests, along with 83°C for the CPU.

The Legion Slim 5 comes with Nvidia's portable RTX 4060 as its highest configuration. So while it won't be able to hit Baldur's Gate 3 at 200-plus fps, the 105W of power behind it should run at even lower temperatures than the Blade with any luck.

As for the rest of the specs, Lenovo has chosen the same Ryzen 9 7940HS as the Blade, so expect great things when it comes to CPU power.

Lenovo also opted for a 2880 x 1800, 120Hz panel; the 16:10 ratio helps boost productivity. And I'm a big fan of the redesigned keyboard on the 14-inch chassis; like the Blade, Lenovo went with a Sun Nan pad, and the TrueStrike board doesn't look cramped in this small form factor.

The Lenovo Legion Slim 5, coming around September, starts at $1,440 and comes with three months of free Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
