First gameplay of the "Riven" remake is shown, with the co-director of the original "Myst" sequel leading the project.

At this year's MysteriumCon, Cyan Worlds, the creator of Myst, presented the first alpha gameplay of the Riven remake: the first alpha gameplay of the game. The short demo came at the end of the presentation, which also revealed that Riven's original co-director, Richard Vander Wende, will helm the remake.

The demo showed off part of the mid-game, a puzzle involving a large boiler by a lake and scaffolding leading from the lake. The look of the game is reminiscent of Cyan Worlds' 2021 remake of Myst, but like that first remake, Riven's gorgeous, dreamy aesthetic survives the shift from pre-rendered scenes to real-time, full 3D exploration.

Time will tell if the remake handles the gameplay transition better than "Myst," but there is hope in that regard. However, the game creators insist that they do not intend to "trivialize"

this basic point-and-click adventure.

To that end, Cyan Worlds has hired Richard Vander Wende, co-director of the original game and former artist for Industrial Light and Magic and Disney, to direct the remake. Vander Wende is widely known as a major force behind the unique and gorgeous world of Riven, and according to Cyan Worlds, he is not a recent addition, but has already been working on the project for some time.

CyanWorlds explained that the Riven remake is playable from start to finish, but that it will still take quite a while to be ready to ship; Cyan Worlds is not yet ready to commit to a release date for the Riven remake, but the Cyan Worlds presenter jokingly promised that it would definitely be released prior to Riven's 30th anniversary in 2027.
