BattleBit developers battled incessant DDoS attacks, but this blocky shooter has a big future

Some people don't like to see others have fun or their creators succeed. That's the only takeaway I got from the update by the four developers of BattleBit Remastered, a 254-player lo-fi shooter that was released in mid-June to great acclaim and topped Steam's bestseller list.

The latest update details how developer SgtOkiDoki and his staff have suffered a "major" DDoS attack on BattleBit's servers since launch day. The first week after launch was pretty smooth sailing, and aside from some packet loss, few people noticed. To quote a developer, to quote a developer, "There were quite a few DDOS attacks on all our servers continuously, some of which literally lasted all day."

The relative peace allowed Battlebit developers to improve quality of life, fix bugs reported by the community, and work on new content. The second week after launch was a little rougher.

"A determined group of individuals who had previously failed to bring down our servers found a weakness in our firewall and began using this weakness to attack any server they wanted," said a Battlebit developer." As a result of these attacks on our game servers, our server scheduling system also malfunctioned (e.g. 900 people in queue), which greatly affected our development. We had to focus our efforts on collecting and analyzing attack data and working to correct this flaw in our firewall."

They did not comment on the situation at the time to avoid "alerting others who failed to bring down our servers about this flaw in our firewall until we patched it."

Now that the Battle Bits team has addressed the issue, they have time to make further tweaks to the game. This is because PC Gamer's Morgan Park has already pointed out how good BattleBit is. The fact that it stands out from the crowd in the crowded shooter genre says a lot about how much fun people are having on a huge, chaotic battlefield.

The BattleBit team remains committed to the game and reassures players that they intend to do so "whether or not we can maintain this level of popularity." They also plan to recruit a team dedicated to detecting and eliminating cheaters. New game modes, new weapons, gadgets, maps, and map reworkings are also planned for the future. A community server is also in the works and will have "dedicated game modes, maps, and game mode rules tailored based on administrator preferences."

Indie Battlefield with a community server. That's why I play on PC.
