Final Fantasy 14's new seasonal event, "Let It Rain Campaign," has begun. The event offers a 50% increase in Manderville Gold Saucer Points (MGP) earned from the Gold Saucer during the event period to purchase a number of cool rewards, including emotes, hairstyles, and a four-person airship. However, the quest rewards have been a head scratcher in the game's subreddit.
Some background: the Hildebrand's Adventure quest line is a slapstick affair that serves double duty as a way for animators to test the game's aging engine. Less concerned with such trivial matters as the laws of physics and common sense, it features mile-high piledriver suplexes, alien abductions, and most recently, the cursed low-poly clone of the main character and superstar detective, Hildebrand Manderville.
Completing this quest will give you a minion of Hildebrand's father, Godbert Mandaville. Godbert Mandaville is a genius goldsmith, owner of the Gold Saucer and one of the most powerful characters in Final Fantasy 14's story.
Godbert appears mainly to motivate his son by pile-driving him from orbit. He is also frighteningly strong, able to break the sound barrier on foot in his underwear and jump higher than a dragoon. He can also push the envelope single-handedly. Something we Godslayers and saviors of the realm can only do in a party of four. By the way, he does all of this as a crafting job. I have played this game for thousands of hours and have no idea.
So imagine the scandal when his minions are generally quite weak. In the mini-game "Lord of Vermillion," in which he fights minions in Final Fantasy 14, Godbert is outclassed by his son in attack, defense, and even speed stats. This is a poor imitation of the original Mandervillian Man, whose fearsome prowess earned him meme status within the community.
"It's no secret that Godbert is faster and stronger than Hildebrand, this is a travesty," commented UnluckyScarecrow, while user ACertainBeardedMan noted that the minion is "still wearing clothes." Since Godbert always takes off his clothes before performing his superhuman feats, perhaps his snazzy outfit serves as Rock Lee-style training weights to hold him back until he needs to exert his strength.
A slightly more heartwarming reason for this clear violation of the norm was written by user StylizedPenguin. If we put aside the idea that stats are just game mechanics, perhaps Godbert felt that his son's automaton should be stronger than [himself]. He genuinely loves his son, even if he is treated roughly in the Mandaville way.
Still, it's hard to pass it off as the real thing. This minion can be obtained by completing the quest chain "A Golden Opportunity," which can be received from Kipih Jakkya on the steps of Nardo in Urda until July 18.
