Apple has been forced to drastically reduce production of its Vision Pro VR headset. Plans to release a more affordable Vision Pro have also been postponed.
When Apple first announced the $3,500 Vision Pro VR headset, it expected to produce around 1 million units in the first year. However, as the Financial Times reports, that may not exactly be feasible.
A manufacturing company known as Luxshare, which is expected to work on the initial assembly of the VR headset, now admits that only 400,000 units of the Vision Pro will be produced in its first year of release.
Luxshare also appears to be the only assembly company expected to work on the headset, which would really put the kibosh on the job.
After the Vision Pro price was officially announced, Bloomberg information analysts Anurag Rana and Andrew Girard predicted that no more than about 500,000 units would be released, noting that "there will be no significant financial impact over the next three years." They noted that "there will be no significant financial impact over the next three years. Not really a surprise, especially after the online reaction to the Vision Pro price tag.
So what is it about the Vision Pro's announced specs that has Luxshare in trouble? That would be the high-resolution inner display. This is an eye display feature that projects the hidden parts of the wearer's face onto the front of the headset.
Just saying it out loud rolls off the tongue, but it's not hard to imagine how difficult it would be to grasp mass production. And honestly, I don't think it would matter much if we left it out.
Given that Zuckerberg realized that all the Vision Pro demos are videos of people just "sitting on the couch by themselves" ...... Who would watch them?
