Diablo 4 Patch Adds Another Way to Earn Unique Loot

The latest patch for Diablo 4 is version 1.0.4, with modest bug fixes and gameplay tweaks. Those who have been desperately searching for unique items to complete their builds will be pleased to know that there is a new way to acquire them. The patch notes state: "Helltide chests now drop unique items."

If you haven't noticed that Helltide chests no longer contain Unique, you're not alone. In the latest Diablo developer update, General Manager Rod Fergusson admitted that he was unaware that Helltide's mystery chests also do not drop Unique.

As Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora explained, "When players are trying to target farms for certain types of Uniques for the builds needed to bring them online, the ones obtained from Helltide [...] I want to make sure that Tortured Gifts is a really good opportunity to try to target them."

The Helltide event is unlocked when you reach the Nightmare World Tier difficulty level and a portion of the map turns red to let you know that you can earn Aberrant Cinders by killing bad guys in that particular zone. Aberrant Cinders can be used to open treasure chests in the Tortured Gift of Mystery. Adding uniques to the loot pool would make Helltides an even more attractive farm.

So far, running nightmare dungeons and defeating world bosses on Torment or higher difficulty have been the best ways to acquire unique items; it remains to be seen if drop rates at Helltides will make it a competitive option.

The other big Diablo 4 news announced in the developer update concerns Season 1, which will apparently add a super gem that will allow you to create "stupid new broken builds". I'm looking forward to this.
