27-inch, IPS, 1765 Hz gaming monitors are now available from brands I've heard of. That includes a guy who eats his own head.

So let me introduce you to the ASRock Phantom Gaming PG27FF1A, a steal at $100 from Newegg. At this price point, all kinds of allowances can be made. At this price point, all kinds of tolerances are possible.

The IPS panel covers 94% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and has a response time of 1 ms on the MPRT metric, but around 2 ms on the more demanding GtG metric. However, it is still fast enough.

As for connectivity, both DisplayPort and HDMI are available, and the stylish-looking stand supports both tilt and swivel adjustment, but not height adjustment. 165 Hz refresh, along with AMD FreeSync Premium support for smooth, tear-free gameplay. [HDR 10 signal processing is also supported. As for what you don't get, HDR is included. It means you won't get a true HDR experience. It has a peak brightness of 250 nits and no local dimming.

Of course, 250 nits is about the same brightness as a $1,000 QD-OLED monitor would display at full screen. Thus, while we would prefer a higher number, it is not an absolute deal-breaker, especially at this price point.

The other noticeable drawback is pixel density. This is 27 inches at 1080p and the result is only 82 pixels per inch. This is a bit awkward for Windows fonts and image clarity. But if you're shopping in this market, you won't be installing a $1,000 GPU.

In other words, 1080p is a good choice for a budget gaming monitor if you want decent frame rates from a relatively affordable graphics card. Aside from the minor annoyance of applying for rebates to get the final $25 off, this is how expensive this monitor makes a budget GPU look. [If a 27" IPS panel, LED backlight, control electronics, enclosure, and stand can all be purchased, paid for, and shipped for $100 plus sales tax, then Nvidia's most shabby graphics card at $300 is a bit of a joke.
